Description:
Purpleheart
has creamy white/gray sapwood. It starts out as
heartwood a bright, dramatic purple when freshly cut,
darkening into a deeper purple with age. It has a
medium to fine texture with a luster that ranges from medium
to high. Purpleheart has a high bending and crushing
strength and stiffness with medium resistance to shock
loads. A great feature when used as trailer or truck
decking. It is hard and does not mar or dent easily.
The Tree: Found in
Central and South America, this exotic wood is a worldwide
favorite. Tall and large trees grow abundantly to
heights of 100 to 150 feet, sometimes reaching a diameter of
five feet with clear knot free log lengths.
Light and Air-Induced Changes:
Treatment against the effects of ultra-violet rays has been
suggested to maintain the original purple color.
Treating the wood with Armoral before applying a lacquer
will hold the distinct purple color.
Staining: The purpleheart
wood takes finishes rather well. Water-based finishes
hold the purple color the best. Any spirit finishes
has been reported to remove the color.
Durability: Peltogyne
heartwood is highly resistant to fungi, very resistant to
dry-wood termites, and slightly resistant to marine borers.
The wood is also said to be resistant to chemicals such as
acids. |
